Day 17

Whom Does God Want You to Mentor?

2 Timothy 2:2 —“And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
The relationship between Paul and Timothy is one of the coolest relationships in the New Testament.  God brought together Paul, a legalistic pharisee turned apostle of Christ, and Timothy, an ethnically mixed Jewish/Greek kid from Lystra.

Paul viewed Timothy as his spiritual son. One can only imagine the time they must have spent sharing life together — talking, laughing, crying, and maybe even debating at times — but all in all, embracing the common goal of sharing the gospel.

In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul reminds Timothy to equip other faithful men in the same way that Paul equipped Timothy. Paul recognized the value in disciple-making -- that is, the value in making disciples of Jesus Christ.  Whether Timothy realized it at the time or not, Paul was preparing him to shepherd others.

What a blessing to have a Paul figure in your life! But like Timothy, at some point God expects us to faithfully pour into the lives of others.
Pray: God, thank You for the spiritual mentors You have placed in my life. And thank You for all they have done to point me to You. Dear Lord, help me to recognize that You desire for me to do the same with others. Open my eyes to the people that You want me to influence.
